The Mirror, Before You Leave
A thirty-second confidence ritual for the door, not the deck.
What you'll need
- A mirror you actually pass on your way out
- Thirty seconds you were going to spend checking your phone anyway
The ritual
Stop at the mirror. Actually stop — don't glance mid-stride.
Look at yourself for a full breath before you fix anything. Not the flaw-finding scan. Just look.
Then say, out loud or in your head, one true thing about who you're about to be for the next few hours. Not an affirmation. A fact. "I know what I'm talking about." "I don't need them to like me." "I've survived worse than this meeting."
Fix your hair, your lipstick, your collar — whatever you were going to fix anyway — and leave. Don't check again once you're out the door.
Ava's note
This isn't about looking hot, though you probably will. It's about deciding who's walking out that door before the world decides for you. Most people let the first stranger's glance of the day set their whole nervous system. Beat them to it.
I do this before every reading, every date, and one memorable landlord dispute. Undefeated so far.
